Hi Jan

Plums are one of the most perishable of all stone fruits and are the most susceptible to mould so need to be well cared for.
pruning the tree (this may vary depending on variety) will help produce more fruit.
considering you need to allow 3-5 metres for the spreading canopy for each plum tree this may not be an option for a small garden.
Adding Tui Lime around the drip line will keep roots fed and increase fruiting success.

good luck!
