Kiwifruit

Kiwifruit are an exceptionally high source of natural vitamin C which acts as a powerful antioxidant strengthening over 300 functions in the body. Alongside being an excellent source of dietary fibre, the black seeds of kiwifruit contain omega 3 fatty acids which can assist body cells to function optimally.

Compared by gram, kiwifruit contain more vitamin C than an orange. It is suggested one large kiwifruit can provide over 100% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin C. Vitamin C is essential for tissue growth and repair, and has a special role to play in the production of Collagen. Collagen provides substance and structure to our skin and it is the depletion of collagen that can cause the formation of facial character lines over time. Vitamin C can be extremely helpful in warding off the effects of ageing.

The Vitamin C in kiwifruit can strengthen our immunity as Vitamin C acts in our body fluids scavenging toxins and acting directly against bacteria and viruses. Frequent coughs and colds, increased infections and poor wound healing are often indicators that more vitamin C is required in the diet. Likewise, because the mineral Iron relies on vitamin C to be absorbed from the digestive tract, low vitamin C could jeopardise Iron absorption leading to the fatigue and poor energy levels associated with an Iron deficiency.

Natural sources of vitamins are often more effectively absorbed and utilised when they are provided from foods. In the case of the kiwifruit, they also contain the bioflavanoids which facilitate the absorption of vitamin C and enhance its functionality in the body.

The omega 3 found in the black seeds of kiwifruit contribute to healthy body cells by helping to build a soft pliable outer membrane of our cells. A membrane like this is more able to accept nutrients and expel wastes, plus it is more fluid and able to better fit its environment. In the case of brain cells, ‘messages’ travel more easily. When membranes become hard, as can be the case with excessive saturated fat, cells are more rigid and can be less functional.
