KatieKarrotHi *|FNAME|*,

This week we continue with our bird theme, talking about raising chickens in your garden. We have a delicious recipe to tickle your tastebuds from Heilala Vanilla, some scrummy hampers for you to win, and top tips on composting for a healthy garden.

As part of our autumn garden season we would like to hold a live question and answer session on Facebook with gardening expert Rachel Vogan so you can get your gardening questions answered instantly! Please take two minutes to answer a couple of questions so we know what time/day you would like this to take place. To say thank you, the first 50 people to complete the survey will receive a sachet of Seasol Plant Tonic.

Gardener's Diary - MAY - What to Sow

With May knocking on our door, it is time to start thinking about the late autumn tasks for the garden. May is preparation time for the upcoming dormant cold season and planning for spring.

  • Plant spring-maturing cabbages and cauliflower.

  • In warmer districts plant lettuces and other salad greens.

  • In cold districts sow lettuces in glass boxes or polytunnels.

  • Salad leaves can be grown in pots to be moved around as cold weather lingers.

  • Broad beans can be planted in well-drained soil.

  • Sow hardy vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, garlic, onions, parsley, radish and spinach.

  • If onions are going to be planted, prepare the ground by digging in Tui Organic Compost and Tui Super Sheep Pellets, or animal manure.

How to Compost

Compost is nature's way of recycling. For thousands of years people have used compost because of its significant effect on the growth of food crops. Made from waste garden material, compost is an essential ingredient for creating rich, friable soil and therefore healthy plants.

You can make your own compost from kitchen scraps and garden waste, or buy ready-made 100% Weed Free Tui Organic Compost at your local garden centre. Tui Organic Compost is now available in a handy 20L size.

Read our how-to guide to composting or read on for composting tips.

In Focus: Blueberries

Blueberry plants can be planted all year round and can handle colder weather. They are perfect for planting in pots and like sandy soil with extra peat added. We are at the end of the blueberry season - the flowers form in spring with the fruit ripening from early summer through to early autumn.

Nutritional Information

Blueberries are well known as a superfood because they rate highly when compared to other foods for their content of antioxidants. Because blueberries are such a rich source of antioxidants, they appear as helpful in a wide range of studies which look at the effect of blueberries on health. For example, when the antioxidants in blueberries help clean up free radicals, our cardiovascular and nervous systems are protected from oxidative stress. What this means is that things like our blood vessels dilate better, and the delicate neurons that carry our thought processes are protected.

Garden Question of the week:

When and how should I use compost?

  • It is important to top up your garden with compost such as Tui Organic Compost every season to keep soil healthy.

  • When preparing garden beds dig in compost to a depth of 15-20cm.

  • Combine compost with Tui Vegetable Mix when planting veggies for an added nutrients boost.

  • When planting trees and shrubs mix compost to the planting hole to aid establishment.

  • If making your own compost and the natural process is taking a while, add Tui Compost Enhancer to your compost bin. The hydrated lime accelerates composting and helps neutralise acidic soils.

Chicken Time - Rachel Vogan

I got a chicken house for Christmas, it is one of the best presents I have ever received.

Waking up to fresh eggs, you have collected from your own chickens in your own garden is heaven.

I had wanted chooks for ages, I had them years ago, but over time the numbers dwindled... read more.
