How can I get my cauliflower to form a head?

  Waikato
  December

Q.

The head of my cauliflower has not appeared but the green outer leaves a huge. Should I cut off some of the larger green outer leaves?

Trevor Norling

A.

Hi Trevor, this is called 'non-heading' when plants produce loads of leaves and no crop. It is often an issue with too much nitrogen fertiliser, which can happen when animal manures are used solely to fertilise vegetables. These types of brassicas need potassium and phosphorus to form the head, therefore we suggest feeding with Tui Vegetable Food for a balanced feed. A side dressing now of Tui Sulphate of Potash will help give it a boost of potassium for head development.
