When is it best to prune my dwarf almond tree?

  Wanganui
  March

Q.

When is it best to prune my dwarf almond (Garden Prince) tree? It is 4 years old and has only blossomed in its 2nd year (none since), but has plenty of healthy growth.

Rosemary

A.

Hi Rosemary, repeated pruning is not recommended for almonds. Once the framework is established in the first few years, from then on only take out dead, dying, diseased and crossing over branches to open up the canopy to prevent disease.

Trees are self fertile and Garden Prince tolerates warmer climates not requiring the chilling of other varieties. Feed your tree with a fertiliser rich in potassium. Is it in a pot or the garden? If in a pot use a controlled release fertiliser such as Tui Enrich Fruit, Citrus Tree & Shrub or if in the garden use Tui Novatec Premium fertiliser.
